A message from our Care Director, Harmony Vuycankiat

Every day at Onehope Refuge, I have an opportunity to see the Lord at work in the lives of the moms and children that we serve. Recently, I had a conversation with one of our moms about her time here and she gave me some great feedback about our ministry. Without hesitation, she told me that she has never met anyone in her whole life as nice as the people that work here. I thought, “Wow! What a wonderful thing to say about our staff!” And it absolutely is. However, as I pondered this compliment a little bit more, it turned into a reality check moment for me. What she was really expressing is that, in all her 29 years, she had never once experienced being around someone who truly showed her the love of Christ. That is a sobering thought! For someone like me, who grew up in a loving Christian home, it’s almost impossible to imagine what it would be like to have an upbringing so different. Yet, her sweet words gave me the perspective shift that I needed to continue to meet these beautiful moms right where they are. A glimpse of her struggle only strengthened my resolve to display Jesus every single day. What an awesome privilege and responsibility we have to impact the trajectory of someone’s life simply by showing up with gentleness in our hearts and kindness on our lips. This work that we do at Onehope Refuge is Kingdom Work! God’s word makes it clear that all of us, no matter who we serve, are called to a laid-down life of love.

“Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart.” (Proverbs 3:3, NIV)

My prayer is that God continues to show each of us the opportunities we have every single day for our lives to speak of His goodness. A simple conversation could turn into a moment of revelation that brings someone into our path who needs heart transformation. May we take advantage of every opportunity we have to introduce someone to God’s love because one nice word could plant seeds that change someone’s life.
